One morning in September 2003, the steeple of the church in Sare caught fire and was almost completely destroyed. A year later, the Navarrese sculptor Juan GORRITI discovered the charred remains of his frame in a nearby field. In agreement with the Town Hall, he is responsible for reviving the burnt beams by converting them into sculptures, to be discovered today in the church.
The Saint-Martin church also presents a reminder of its history since the XNUMXth century, discoidal bronze stelae, three floors of galleries typical of the Basque Country and a tower with six floors with oak beams. The bell tower has been completely rebuilt. It can be visited, in particular to see its bell, the most decorated in France.
