One morning in September 2003, the bell tower of the church of Sare caught fire and was almost completely destroyed. A year later, the Navarrese sculptor Juan GORRITI discovered the charred remains of its framework in a nearby field. In agreement with the town hall, he took it upon himself to revive the burnt beams by converting them into sculptures, which can be seen today in the church.
The church of San Martín also has a reminder of its history since the 17th century, bronze discoidal steles, three floors of galleries typical of the Basque Country and a tower with six oak-beamed floors. The bell tower has been completely rebuilt. It can be visited, in particular to see its bell, the most decorated in France.
The Sare tourist office organises guided tours from June to September: our view!
